Three-Course Delight at Xich Lo

Xich Lo is a Vietnamese restaurant in Oslo on the 3rd floor on the fashion house Eger @ Egertorget. Just like the rest of the center it is posh and polished, and the staff is very polite and attentive.

The menu


You can choose between regular (tempting) Vietnamese dishes, and three-course or a four-course meal from the menu. Both meats and seafood is available to choose from the menu. I don’t eat seafood and was happy to find I could choose a set menu with only meats.

Starter

Xich Lo - Starter
*Lamb roll in la-lot leaves and peanut sauce

I usually don’t care much for lamb,  but this one had a spicier taste and the peanut sauce was a nice touch; for both the lamb and the springrolls! My rating: ♥♥♥

*Braised ribs in five spice with apple compote and chili

Lean thin ribs in a delicious complementing apple compote. WOW! Thomas needs to learn how to make this at home. My rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

*Spring rolls with chicken, wood ear mushroom and glass noodles

Best spring roll I have ever tasted. I am not a great fan of spring rolls, but these were good. Mushroom I don’t like and glass noodles neither, but I didn’t know what was in it when I consumed  them and it didn’t disgust me. I guess maybe when done right I do like them! My rating: ♥♥♥♥

Main Course

*Deer filet with sautéed vegetables and shiitake mushrooms in tamarind sauce

I ordered mine well done and it was perfectly well done, still juicy, but no medium crap. This was the disappointment of the set menu. It tasted deer, nothing more and nothing less. The sauce was boring, so didn’t add anything. I liked it OK, but wouldn’t order again. I could have had the spring rolls or the ribs as a main course. My rating: ♥♥♥

Dessert

Xich Lo - Dessert

*Lichiparfait with crushed pistachios

Yummy! Ice cream meets Crème Brûlée meets pistachios. I still would have preferred a Crème Brûlée, but the parfait went better with the fruit salad. My rating: ♥♥♥♥

*Exotic fruit salad

Good, but it had nothing on the parfait or the tart. My rating: ♥♥♥

*Tart with passionfruit cream and caramelized bananas

I am so glad this came as a set-of-three, as I would never have thought to choose this tart.Turns out the tart with caramelized bananas is one of the best desserts I have ever had! It’s like chocolate; I want more! My rating: ♥♥♥♥♥

Price: 465 NOK

You can also order a 3-5 glass wine package to go with the meal. I felt like the wine complemented the food, and I was ready for a lot more of it when we left, so probably they knew what they were doing.

The atmosphere

Elegant dining on the 3rd floor of Eger. There’s a few tables with window seats, reservations are highly recommended. Romantic and dark setting, with tables for a small party of two or large groups.
